From March 18 to 22, PS 34 was spreading kindness by joining in the Sandy Hook Promise and participating in "Start With Hello Week". Kindness is an excellent way of building a vibrant community that includes everyone. The goal of this initiative is to teach students the skills they need to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness, and encourage them to reach out to other students who may be dealing with social isolation. Being kind and inclusive is a Win-Win for everyone. Making a difference could be as simple as saying "hello".
Habit 4 Think Win-Win: “I’m kind to others and try to think of ways to help everyone be happy and not left out. I think about what other people want not just what I want.”
- Monday March 18: “Start with Hello Week” Kick Off with assemblies and classroom discussion introduction. A “Buddy Bench” will be introduced in the school yard for students to utilize at recess to promote inclusion and kindness. Students will be introduced to the book “The Invisible Boy” by Trudy Ludwig.
- Tuesday, March 19: “Caught Being Kind”. Students who are caught being kind at lunch & recess will add a message to be posted on the Kindness Bulletin Board in the cafeteria. Classes will synergize & start their own Kindness & Positivity walls.
- Wednesday, March 20, 2019: “Hey Day!- Hello My Name is..”, School community wears a “Hello” tag in English and in another language. Students will be introduced to the book “The Day You Begin” by Rafael Lopez. Say Hello to as many people as you can today!
- Thursday, March 21: “Get to know Me Day!” Reach out & connect with classmates with an icebreaker game and activity.
